Sri Lanka - Batticaloa, Vakarai, Tricomalee (Eastern Province) 2014

Kandy - Mahiyanganaya Road

Mahiyanganaya Bridge

Batticaloa, AKA 'Batti'

Fishing Huts in Batticaloa

Pine Trees in Batti, alongside the beach and lagoon

A lonely fisherman

trying his luck with the rough seas
Beautiful Palm Trees. A common sit in the east coast

Fresh Prawns and Crabs from the lagoon behind. It can't get any fresher! ...

Fisherman casting his net for Prawns and small fish. Another common site in and around Batti

A Brahamine Kyte Eagle circling around my head looking for a kill. Another common site in the East Coast

A Causway going into Batti

East Coast Fashion Baby!

Another common site in the East Coast. The fairer sex in bicycles.

Business as usual ...

Gottchya!

Entering the Beautiful town of Vakarai which was unaccessible for nearly 3 decades.

My favorite eatery in Vakarai called the 'Muslim Hotel' run by Rahuman and his Wife. The food is sooper dooper! and CLEAN!

Vakarai Lagoon

A Storm is brewing

The scene right opposite the OLD Vakarai Rest House! (Which is no more after the 2004 Tsunami) Still very calm and serene. Unspoilt!

The white sand in front right of the lamp post is where the OLD 2 bed room Vakarai Rest House used to be. It is nomore as the 2004 Tsunami completely destroyed the building. Presently, there is a Cemetery/Church on the left of the rest house and the Public Library on the rightside (When facing the lagoon). Accross the road opposite of the rest house is the Vakarai Hospital.

Fisherman in Trinco

My favorite beach in Trinco (Not Nilaveli). It's also a fishing paradise due to the river meeting the sea.

Catching Prawns

Had an excellent rice and curry at this road side boutique just past Kuchchuveli

A fisherman's house

A bus stand under water due to the heavy rains the previous days

Abiding the road rules

Wild Buffalo. Looks innocent. But given the chance, you would have taken me! Looked so Majestic!

What beautiful scenery from here onwards up north through the causeways ...etc towards Mullaitivu. Didn't pass more than 5 vehicles for about 2 hours! Totally unspoilt and isolated. The roads are fantabulous! My favorite drive in Sri Lanka no doubt!

Trinco Beach

Fort Federick

Koneswaram Temple

Trinco Town

Drying Fish

Over 2 Tons of Prawns. Sold at Rs. 250/= per Killo (US$ 2/= per killo)

Hauling in the nets! 'Hoya! Hoya!'...

Fishing Hut

The Beautiful 'Lankapatuna'

Taking the boat accross to 'Lankapatuna' (Rs. 20/= Return). Next time, there will be a bridge to cross.

The scene from the top of 'Lankapatuna'. You actually don't feel like comming down as the vista is incredible all around.

Back on the 'Vakarai Beach'. Pristine and unspoilt. Not a soul on the beach!

Catching Prawns by the Panichchangkerny Bridge. Famous for Prawns and Crabs right around the year!

Fisherman, Vakarai Lagoon

Army doing some development work in the area! Better than fighting for sure!

The front wall of the Vakarai Rest House facing the lagoon is between the 2 bushes alongside the water. I remember the water was very shallow and we used to walk accross to the other side!

The Church next to the Vakarai Rest House. This too was destroyed by the 2004 Tsunami but was rebuilt and re-opened by MR in September, 2013. Fantastic location.

The Panichchangkerny Bridge which replaced the causeway

Fisherman is Vakarai 'Chillin Out'

ORIGINAL 'Karthakolombung Mangoes'. The Real Thing, SWEET as Honey! :) Rs. 20/= per fruit (The Biggest!)
