Sri Lanka - Getting charged by an Elephant at the Minneriya National Park

I will never forget this incident. Getting charged by an Elephant who had already trashed a vehicle about 1/2 hour before. He almost got my brand new Nikon D7000 camera. Missed by a whisker! What a colorful day it was. It could have gone terribly wrong.

Natural Defense Mechanism - Once the sole elephant got aggressive and aroused the rest of the heard, they huddle around the tinniest calves in a show of protecting them. It was quite a spectacle to see the largest elephant which is in the middle trumpeting, mock charging and spurring up the rest of the heard, giving us a prior warning befoe they meant business.
